“The 2018 Heritage Music Festival featuring the 68th Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship just finished in Shelburne, Ontario. This year’s Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Champion, Diana Dawydchak of Etobicoke, Ontario, was crowned at the finals on Saturday, August 11. For the first time, the Open Class was dominated by women, with only one man amongst the five competitors. Award results for all of the competition classes are attached. Kyle Burghout won the Canadian Tune of Choice trophy and award with Blackjack Whiskey by Graham Townsend. The Junior Championship (13-18 year olds) was won by Joelle Crigger of Toronto, Ontario.

Besides the fiddle competition on Saturday, the weekend featured something for everyone, with a Country Jamboree on Wednesday evening, the Beckett Family fiddling and stepdancing their way through Thursday evening, and The Trews rocking the arena on Friday.

Heritage Music Festival Chair, Bobbi Ferguson, was very happy with this year’s event, “The Rotary members and other volunteers put many hours of work into organizing the Festival and it is fantastic to see so many people out having a good time and enjoying the great variety of music. We are aiming for even more people next year!”

AND of course, The Shelburne Freeelancer attended as well. The Heritage Music Festival 2018 Kicked off  Wednesday evening at Shelburne’s Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex (CDRC) with a Country Jamboree featuring Greg Holmes &Friends and not a moment was wasted as the audience was up and dancing!

Thursday evening featured The Beckett Family and Special Guests. The lively entertainment included stepping, a very impressive type of dancing that rivals River Dance type moves and pace and a variety of old time country music mixed with high spirited “contemporary” pieces.
